On Tuesday, the Athens Wedding Professionals luncheon featured Suki Janssen, from the ACC Solid Waste Department, on recycling at events and your wedding. Last week we were a sponsor and catered the Georgia Organics Conference at the Classic Center. The Solid Waster Department rented us a commercial compost for the event, which was beneficial in staying green at such a green focused event. The compost required a cement slab to operate. We were able to put food scraps and other things which would normally been thrown away.

Suki also talked about ways to give green favors at your wedding. She suggested using Preserve biodegradable plates, cups, utensils and environment friendly trash bags all into a recycled cloth bag. It made the cutest picnic basket, and is something the guests will certainly utilize later. Most of these products are currently available at Earth Fare.

I know this is an actual basket, but you get the idea.

You could also use the biodegradable plates and serving equipment at your wedding on the buffet line instead of glass plates.

So the lesson for today, recycle in style.

Today, all the staff is having their picture taken by Jason Thrasher! Thrasher has worked with us on weddings, and we are honored to have him come take our pictures today!

I feel like I’m in middle school on school picture day, we are all dressed up in black with anticipation of our photo shoot! We’re crossing my fingers for the bad weather to hold off, so we can take them at the Hill.

Be sure to check out our website in a couple weeks with our pictures on it!

Thanks to Jason Thrasher for helping us!

Below is some of Jason’s work.

Are meant to convey pride and success, and were primarily used by royalty. Now they are very popular as a main color at weddings. Our Floral Director, Bart Scott, has a handful of purple flowers he enjoys using: Trachelium, Purple Vanda Orchids, Allium, Purple Mini Callas and Lisianthus.

Here are some of my favorite purple floral arrangements from our portfolio.

Fruits have been used in floral arrangements in the United States since the early 1800’s in the White House for President James Madison. In the 1800’s florists were very conservative and used wax fruits along with wax and porcelain flowers. First Lady Kennedy preferred her arrangements more of the 16-century Flemish floral and fruit design.

Now over 200 years later, the trend is still being actively used and will continue being a great accent to floral arrangements. It’s such a fun and easy way to add color to your buffet table or guest tables, and there are numerous ways to incorporate fruit.

One of our favorite ways is putting the fruit underneath glass on the table.

Pomegranates are used to accent the red on the buffet tables.

Another option is actually putting the fruit into the vases with flowers or just filling vases completely with fruit.

I love the lime green stripe behind the vase. It really helps incorporate the apples.

Fruits work well with any theme, and are a great way to create unique arrangements.

Please check back Friday, February 12 for our last Floral Friday series.
