Located just outside Athens, GA, Historic Smithonia Farm provides a secluded  feel without having to venture far from the city.  Built in the late 1800s by Col. James Monroe Smith as an agricultural and manufacturing masterpiece, the Farm was reopened in 2001 as Tucker Plantation, and quickly became one of Georgia’s most sought-after event spaces. With new management (Pam NeSmith – former Bottleworks owner) and a new name (Historic Smithonia Farm), this historic location is re-opening its doors with the juxtaposition of rustic and modern motifs creating a bride-to-be’s dream venue.

One of the greatest features of this historic venue is its versatility.  It has several charming event spaces for both formal and casual gatherings.  The layout of the Farm provides easy access between sites, and gives clients many options when planning their event setting. The natural landscape and deconstructed agrarian buildings provide the perfect backdrop for indoor and outdoor ceremonies and/or receptions.

The property’s three immense yet elegant brick barns create a shabby chic theme with heart of pine floors, elevated dome ceilings, exposed original wood beams, and wrought iron chandeliers. “The Carriage House (c.1840) overlooking the Ashley River is completely surrounded by ancient Live Oaks with beautifully draped Spanish Moss. Today, the updated building brilliantly dances the fine line between timeless charm and modern amenities.

At night, burning torches line the bank of the river while the patio fireplace sets a festive mood. Inside, the wagon wheel chandeliers hanging from exposed beams set the ambiance with a gentle glow.

The Carriage House can accommodate 150 guests seated with dancing and up to 200-250 guests with buffet or hors d’oeuvres arrangements. Tents on the patio or open lawn can also be added to accommodate many additional guests.

The Carriage House Lawn sits on the bank of the river, providing stunning views and fantastic breezes from the waterway. Accommodating 400+ seated guests, the lawn boasts two picturesque possibilities for a ceremony site: under an arbor of gracefully arching oak trees or on a deck nestled on the banks of the Ashley. (Magnolia Plantation Website)”

Pricing for the Carriage House runs from $1,000 – $5,000 depending on the time of your event.

I know I have blogged about the Taylor-Grady House previously, but I have never highlighted it on it’s own. The Taylor-Grady House was built as Robert Taylor’s summer home in 1844. The Grady family purchased the home in 1863, and referred to is at “an old southern home, with its lofty pillars, and its white pigeons fluttering down through the golden air.”

The ceremony can be on-site in the side garden or in the front yard using the house as the backdrop.

The inside of the house is beautifully decorated, and can be easily incorporated into your wedding. You can have a cocktail hour inside with passed hors d’oeuvres or have the cake inside the main room. Having the cake inside is a great option during the hot summer months.

We normally tent the outside patio for your buffet, bars and dancing.

We have been doing weddings at the Taylor-Grady house for years, and each wedding is unique, personal and fantastic.

Like most girls, it would be my dream to have my wedding at my family’s home; but my dad now lives in Australia and my mom’s house is on a steep hill without lots of great spaces for tents, tables and the perfect black and white checkered dance floor. So where does that leave girls like me?

Shoulderbone Plantation
has several charming spaces for formal and casual gatherings. The fully restored plantation house is an elegant location where family heirlooms and locally made antiques evoke the spirit of antebellum Georgia. The plantation house grounds make an exceptional location for wedding ceremonies and receptions alike. The natural landscape and rustic agrarian buildings are just a part of the allure of Shoulderbone Plantation. They also offer subtle touches to enhance the plantation experience, like having your bridal party escorted to the ceremony in a white vis-à-vis carriage pulled by Percheron horses, providing guests with guided tours of the house, having cocktails on the veranda, or exploring the plantation grounds in a horse drawn carriage.

The large outdoor pavilion is also a unique location for events as well. It is common for brides and grooms to hold the ceremony at the main house and the reception in the pavilion. The covered pavilion is a short walk from the main house and can accommodate up to 400 guests, a band, dance floor and seating. The vast, immaculately kept lawn makes a lovely backdrop for parties, and the pavilion is easily adaptable to a variety of styles and layouts.
